Bad Points

General Comments

I have had my Sharp 902 for over a week now and used it a lot and I have to say this is the best mobile phone I've ever had.
Firstly, and most importantly, it works excellent as a phone - very clear and nice earpiece sound, not the tinny sound you hear in so many phones. The reception is excellent even in the countryside, the volume goes more than loud enough.. It's a decent size to hold on a call, maybe a little thick in the pocket but not a problem for me. But this phone has so many features you accept the size. The length and width is just right. The quality of the phone is excellent, easily as good as a quality digital camera and looks nice enough in silver, white and chrome colours.

When you open it up it has the best 320x240 262k screen I've ever seen. I've played DVDs horizontally on it so I can see how great it is (more on the DVDs later). The keyboard layout couldn't be easier. The volume button on the side takes a little getting used to but after regular use, you get the hang of it. The keys light up in a nice burnt orange colour, which makes a change from blue and is very clear on all the buttons.
The loud speaker and stereo sound is decent enough, not as good as the Motorola E1000 but not too far off. When you plug the headphones in on a call or to listen to your MP3s, it's perfect. No need for an iPod as you can plug in any standard socket stereo headphones you like.
Texting is easy and straightforward, with or without predictive text and you can enter your own words as you would expect. Emails, picture messages, all the things you expect on modern phones is here.. bluetooth, infrared, USB connection to the PC or, as I do, a 1GB SD card and a card reader plugged in the PC to transfer files.
Games are great too. I downloaded the ferrari game which has excellent 3D graphics if you like that sort of thing you wont be disappointed at all. It would be good to get some horizontal games to make the most of this screen.
I have software where I can convert DVDs to a format to play on the phone and with a 1GB SD card I can store a few full films on it if I want or hundreds of MP3s or both. The quality of the movies if done this way are amazing, just like a digital TV, your eyes will not notice the difference. Im still amazed at the quality. It's like having a miniture dvd players in your pocket and the screen is a good size for it too.

The camera is exactly what it says, 2 megapixels and almost as good as a digital camera. I don't notice the difference between my phone and a dedicated 2mpx digital camera, you might, I don't. It's great. You can record excellent quality movies for as long as your SD card allows with sound of course. It has a flash/light which changes colour too like red, blue, green etc. if you want to use it or just use white standard flash. The screen rotates 180 degrees so you can hold it like a digital camera too and the phone recognises when you twist it so you don't get photos on their sides, in this mode you get wide angle pictures. You also get a lead to plug the camera into the TV so you can view your photos.
It is a 3G phone and is very fast surfing Vodafone live and WAP and downloading is very quick. There is a camera above the screen next to the earpiece for video calling.
I have tried out a few phones lately including Motorola E1000 and A1000, Sony Ericsson V800 and Nokia 6630 and nothing comes close to the Sharp 902, for excellent call quality or what the phone is capable of. I have this phone on an 18 month contract with 1000 minutes anytime any network for £30 a month and nothings will make me change for a very long time. This phone has everything you need from a phone and everything you want for entertainment. It's covered everything and I've never said that about a phone before, there always seems to be something missing but the Sharp 902 has it all to date.

Type in 'Sharp 902' on ebay.co.uk for an auction. There's not much 902 items on ebay yet, you'll see it on the first page.

Yes, you should check this phone out before you buy another, or wait to see if the black or orange version comes out here...

1000 anytime, any network minutes per month for £30? Can you let me know where you got this deal as it would be perfect for me. Thanks

The software I use to play movies on the 902 is mediastage which was designed for the Panasonic AV100 but converts the movies very well at 15fps and with an excellent dvd like picture if you have the settings right. It only accepts certain AVI files so you need flaskMPEG (preview version) to convert your DVD or mpeg files to AVI then load them into mediastage. They play in full widescreen, the same size picture as the videos you record on the 902 but perfect DVD quality, better picture than the sony psp too.
I called Vodafone UK directly for my contract. It is called hero package. I actually heard about it on the radio back in January. I don't know if it's available anymore. The £30 only runs for the first six months then goes up to £60 but I intent to change to evening and weekends for £15 after 6 months anyway. It is available on an 18 month contract only. Call Vodafone direct and see if the hero 3G package is still available. This was the best deal I found at the time. The phone cost me £75 with this deal which was great at the time as the phone had just came out. I'm now looking to buy an i-mate jam, hmmmm...

Hey kall, ty for the review, you have made my mind up, I started with the gx10 and was very happy with it, I currently have the gx30 and was absolutely over the moon with the phone few things the needed correcting (Bluetooth, mp3 player etc). I have been waiting for sharps next phone to come out and now I have seen it I want it so bad. The whole sharp range of phones has been terrific and I will probably always have a sharp phone so long as they keep impressing me. Just a few things I want to ask you. 1st Where did you get your phone 1000 min anytime for £30 a month is awesome, do you get texts too? 2nd what software do you use do convert your DVDs? Do you convert avi's to mp4's? great write up by the way, very helpful.
